Progression on The Self Portrait Art Movement Assignment

During todays class Ms Lisa had told us that we would be contunying our progress regarding our art movement self portraits.Since my art movement was arts and craft I had brought all my materials to class in order to continue where I had left off. With the help of my friends they gave me a rough idea on how I can make my dream catcher look more of a self portrait.I showed Ms Lisa my progress on the dream catcher and even asked if I could make the dream catcher in such way that it wouldn't look like any other traditional dream catchers.Ms Lisa told me that it was completely fine and that I have the total freedom to do anything since it is craft related.

My Progression so far :

Crafting supplies that I've used:
1.A ring/Loop
2.Strings/Yawn/Coloured thread
3.Beads
4.Feathers/leaves
5.Glue
6.Wire
7.Patience

The top picture is another dream catcher that I made but I've decided to go with the one in the second  picture.
I tied the strings together and knotted them to the loop which I then added some tiny beads at the centre of the dream catcher just to add a little extra detail.I've kept the loop unwrapped because I like how wooden and minimalistic the loop looks that way.

I begin to add colourful beads and tied them together with the feathers.
Heres a fact,I actually cut open my friendship bracelet that was given to me from my primary friend just to get those beads.

I then wrapped the wires with colourful strings just to add more colour.I then took the coloured wires and coiled them with the feathered beads. This took a lot of patience I've even injured my self with minor cuts.

Excuse the table background, but as you can see I've made a wired side view of my head (with the help of Serra, thank you) to add to my dream catcher.

There you see the loop is finally finished.I again wrapped the wires with colour thread and secured it to the loop. There you have a side view of my portrait.

Art Movement Assignment

During the previous week Ms Lisa had told the us students to do our research regarding different Art MovementsWe were assignment to pick a minimum of three art movement that we preferred and present her the portraits that we roughly sketched. When todays class begun I felt sort of nervous to show Ms Lisa my recreation of some of the art Movements I've chosen.I picked a minimum of three which are Art and Craft Movement,Rococo and Folk Art.

Art and Craft Movement :

I explained to Miss Lisa that Art and Craft Movement is said advocated economic and social reform and has been said to be anti-industrial.A lot of the designs involve nature and traditional crafting was involved.

Rococ :

Rococo or less commonly known as rocococo or "Late Baroque".Their art movement is very artistic with style which affects many aspects of the art including painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, decoration, literature, music and theatre. When I showed Ms Lisa my drawing or Rococo she told me I had made a mistake,so that was not counted nevertheless Im still proud of myself for sketching a portrait for the first time.

Folk Art :

Folk art is also something I  enjoyed researching. Folk Art is characterized by a naive style,in which traditional rules of proportion and perspective are not employed. Many traditional fold art involve crafting such as quilting ,decoy carving and much more. The picture above was a portrait  I painted to represent Folk.

After presenting my portraits to Ms Lisa she told me she liked two of my portraits which are Art and Craft movement and also my Folk Art.Ms Lisa asked me which I preferred most,I explained that I don't mind either one because I do like folk art but on the other hand I have always had a passion for crafting, there's just something about getting your hands down and dirty and create something. When I told Ms Lisa that I had made a dream catchers before she told me it was best for me to take Art and Craft Movement as my assignment Portrait.

Introduction to Principles of Design and Art Movement

Lecture :
Today was my first time meeting Ms.Lisa.We were told in a weeks advance (during orientation) to be well prepared and do our research about the meaning of Art Movement and what it is all about. She did show us a couple of slides regarding different art movement such as steam punk. She also showed us a slide regarding our assignment.
Ms.Lisa had then assigned us to create our very own mind map about ourself and to make a self portrait completely out of scratch using raw elements such as flowers, grass, rocks, moss ect.Trash was also encourage to be used.We were given a good two and a half hours to complete the task laying it all on an A3 paper. We would then be asked to present our art work/mind map  in front of the whole class. We were also questioned as to why we wanted to be a Designer ?

Instruction to Exercise 1 :
1.Find out what represents you and make a mind map of it.
2.Collect natural elements such as flowers, leaves and even trash to make a self portrait of yourself.
3.Make it as creative and unique as possible, one that best represents you.
4.We were given two and a half hours to complete the task.
5.Lastly present your work up front.
6.Answer questions as to why you want to be a Designer?

My presentation artwork :

"This is who I am"
missed the "this"

My self portrait made out of  nature elements

When Miss.Lisa told us about the task that we would be doing for todays class I became very well excited and overwhelm with joy, finally classes outside. We were briefly lectured about the whole assignment .Each student must go around the campus and find any sort of elements by nature such as grass and flowers ,we were also  to use any form of trash into making our self portrait. The moment Ms.Lisa set us off I went dashing outside the class room walls.Me and Shu Ling and the rest of the girls worked as a team and picked out flower petals, different textured grass, leaves, anything eye catching. It drizzled a bit. Doing this assignment made me step out of my comfort zone,I was exposed to different elements which gave a bit of a challenge.

When it was my time to come upfront in the class room my heart skipped a beat I was quit nervous. There I was in front of the class about to begin my presentation but of course I stumbled a bit with my words and ended up giggling.I talked about my love towards mother nature, what kind of foods that I like, animals and my favourite shapes, which I don't have a specific favourite. There was a lot of teasing and laughter when it came to my part and others as well. This was a good sign,to me at least.I think a little bit of tease never hurts anybody,it sorts of breaks the ice. After I showed my classmates my portrait the big question popped out,WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A DESIGNER? To be honest it  caught me a little off guard,I've had all these words in the back of my mind but when the time came for me to say it,I fumbled .Though  I quickly pieced the words I wanted to say I felt like I didn't fully justify as to why I wanted to be a designer. The reason why is because I want to create things ,things of which are my own,I want to create something and have someone admire my art work,I want to impress others and also myself, learning as I go on.To me art is my something unique and it is my passion tho Im not  truly certain as to whom I might be in the future but im surely glad that im happy to be doing design. If you are passionate about something go for it.
